I went to Mexico City for the first time in early November 2024 and was blown away by it. I immediately wanted to come back and have been on the look out for inexpensive tickets since. I was able to score tickets direct from Austin for a long weekend and jumped at the chance to go back. A friend tagged along with a somewhat last minute decision to go. We didn’t really plan much, just a tour at the Museum of Tequila and Mezcal and a planned desire to catch the Museo Nacional de Antropología again. Only other thing was to go check out the local bars and resteraunts.

Getting into CDMX

We got in off of an afterwork flight Wednesday night. Got a ride out to Roma Norte and where we were staying. There was a bar, Ladina Bar, that piqued our interest across from where we were staying and given that it was pretty late, we dropped off our gear and took to the bar. Got the holy trinity of a mezcal shot, a tequila shot, and a cervesa to start off the night. We were there for an hour and a half or so before retiring for the evening.

First Day

For our first morning, we grabbed some lunch and walked to the Museo Nacional de Arte. On the way, we walked through a large park and headed into the Centro area. Overall, the museum was solid. It wasn’t my favorite art museum, but had some interesting stuff. We walked around Centro for a while and caught a ride back to where we were staying.

After cleaning up, we wound up grabbing dinner at a place that escapes me and then walking around while heading to a bar called Bruja. It was a place recommended to my friend and was really neat. They had a comic book menu and was all female owned and staffed. The drinks were good and the staff was superb. I would certainly go back again next time I get to go to Mexico City.

We finished up with one more drink at Ladina Bar.

Second Day

In the morning, we grabbed some lunch and headed out to walk to Museo Nacional de Antropología. We walked around the museum for the late morning. I had been there before, but this is one of my favorite musuems in the world. It is well beyond spectacular and all of the art there is tremendous. Again, one of my absolute favorites in the world.

Given that it was summer, we got a ride back to the Museum of Tequila and Mezcal in Plaza Garibaldi. We got there and had to fend off mariachis trying to convince us to sit through a paid song or two. We were a bit late for our tour, but quickly got underway. The tour was informational and while I have never been as interested in Tequila or Mezcal as my friend, I found it interesting. After the tour there was a tasting and we got to try some stuff we had never had before.

We wrapped up the tasting and headed back to change and walk out to catch the Friday night CMLL show. We walked to the show and explored the area around it some. The show was a lot of fun. It ws the second time I have been to a CMLL show and they are a great way to spend a Friday evening. After the show, we went back to Ladina Bar and had a few drinks before calling it.

Last Day

On the last day of our trip, we did not have much planned. I wanted to grab churros at a place a friend had recommmended and my friend wanted to check out a bar that was reputed to be a top fifty bar in the world. We started off with walking around Roma Norte and grabbed lunch. Then headed towards La Condesa and walked around. We grabbed churros at Churrería El Moro, which were well beyond good.

We hit a bar, Café de Nadie, and dodged an afternoon rainstorm. It was pretty good and everytime we would start to get ready to go, it would start raining again. We finally ended up at the top 50 bar, Licorería Limantour for drinks and a spot of dinner. I was not a big fan of the place, the drinks were good but it wasn’t really my scene. We had to take off early in the morning, so called it around nine pm. We hit Ladina Bar, across from where we were staying, one last time and headed to bed for the early morning flight back to Austin.

Overall Thoughts

I really like Mexico City. It is affordable and everyone we interacted with was welcoming. The Museo Nacional de Antropología continues to be a favorite in the world of mine. Getting to try various mezcals and tequilas was also a highlight. For me, the food in Mexico City is a continual suprise at how good it is. Bruja was a place I would love to go back to as well. As is Churrería El Moro.
